From our family to yours

Ennis & Brown is a family-owned furniture business that was founded in 1989 by my mother and grandmother. They were already experienced in buying, restoring, and selling antique furniture sourced from across the UK and Europe. As a child, I remember going to furniture auctions with my mother, where she would source everything from old Dutch wardrobes to stunning Georgian dressers. They needed a place to display their furniture, so they found a large Dutch barn in Rural Tring. The barn needed a lot of work, so they quickly cornered off a room with a makeshift wall insulated with walls from an old walk in fridge freezer!

Our Story

The showroom was an old Dutch barn with bails of hay from where it used to house pigs in, and there was even a swing hanging from the top of the ceiling that my brother and I would swing on from one end of the barn to the other. The entrance The display started with a mix of furniture and fruits and vegetables from old Covent Garden where my dad was still working. The furniture was a hit, and the business expanded into more rooms. My dad and grandad started making furniture in a makeshift workshop. John Ennis had lots of experience making furniture, and my dad, Paul Brown, was from a long line of greengrocers but soon caught the woodworking bug. John trained him up, and he became a partner alongside my mum and Nan. The business was named simply after the place where the furniture was displayed - Piggeries.

One end of the barn was sectioned off and turned into a makeshift workshop where the family began to make their own furniture. They started by sourcing reclaimed beams in Romania to make rustic dining tables, and while there, they saw a carpenter making furniture for the local church. The design was so intricate and the workmanship so skilled that they couldn't leave without speaking to them.

They felt it would make sense to try and have a couple of their reclaimed oak tables made in the same town the timber was coming from, from rural barns to rural workshops. They loved these tables so much that they expanded the reclaimed oak range further to sideboards and coffee tables. They then found a fanatically skilled metal manufacturer who meticulously made perfectly elegant table bases that contrasted perfectly with their tops, and the rest was history.

Ennis & Brown is all about quality furniture that can be passed down for generations. They carefully design all of their furniture in-house between my brother and me, based on legacy and not short-term trends. They work with British workshops on their ranges too and are relaunching their bespoke kitchen side of the business next year. It will all be designed, made, and finished in a rural picturesque Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

Ennis & Brown has an on-site workshop that is by their showroom in Tring, Hertfordshire, where it all began over 30 years ago. They take pride in sourcing the finest materials and working with skilled craftsmen to create furniture that is "uniquely yours." They strive to capture the essence of a luxurious lifestyle through their furniture, where quality and craftsmanship are at the forefront. At Ennis & Brown, they aim to create timeless pieces that can be cherished for years to come.
