Nick tells the
Story so far
My name is Nick, one of the directors here at Ennis & Brown. Let me run you through the story of our family run business that spans 35 years and 3 generations.
Early Days
In 1989, our parents, with the help of our grandparents, converted part of an old pig barn into a shop called 'Piggeries Pine.' They started by selling country-style antique furniture, mainly sourcing antique dressers from Ireland, which became highly sought after with a waiting list for restored pieces. To meet demand, Grandad Ennis began making dressers from reclaimed timber. Even today, customers still cherish their dressers from those early years.

Hide and Seek
Our parents worked from a small corner inside the large barn, alongside hay bales and a Tarzan style rope that my brothers hung from the rafters to swing from one end of the barn all the way the other. However, as our popularity soared, the space for displaying our furniture became too limiting, forcing us to abandon the swing and expand throughout the barn. Our family home is situated just behind the barn so we spent all of our childhood in the fields adjacent to the showroom, or playing hide and seek in wardrobes. When you walk through the front door of the shop you will still find the family height chart with everyone on it from Granny Ennis to great grandson Jesse

A Way of Life
At the turn of the century Mum and Dad had established themselves locally as the go to place for finding country style furniture. Working with 2 different workshops we specialised in waxed reclaimed furniture, later introducing painted pieces including our custom made shaker style kitchens. As a true family business as we began to grow up us brothers were on hand to help our parents, in this case with waxing the furniture and or sitting in the passengers seat with a map on deliveries.

By 2015, after finishing university, I was eager to dive into furniture design. With my parents' guidance, I began sourcing unique vintage pieces to restore and sell. One favourite was a huge Indian spice rack with handwritten labels, which, when sold, gave me a bittersweet thrill and reinforced my love for this work.
Renting part of the upstairs space from my dad, our vintage furniture business flourished. My brother Justin partnered with me, and we helped with Piggeries Pine, giving our dad a much-needed break. We named our venture Ennis and Brown, honouring our grandparents and parents.
We then started converting agricultural root cutters into table bases. I found the most joy in selling dining tables, believing them to be the most important piece of furniture in a home. A good table brought families together at least a couple of times a week, or made for a good excuse for a memorable dinner party. The excitement people showed for a dining table arriving on delivery just felt infectious. So much so that Justin and I made this our primary focus- designing simple yet naturally stunning tables.

Our table designs quickly gained a stellar reputation for quality. As demand increased, it became too much for just Justin and me to handle. Our parents proposed merging into one company, a move that led to greater success and allowed Dad to cut back his hours—he jokes that working five days a week instead of seven is now part-time! Though much has changed over the years, our ethos remains unchanged: crafting furniture that delights and can be passed down to the next generation. Working with family might sound like a nightmare to some, but we're lucky—we love what we do and couldn't imagine it any other way. We might have one argument a year, but it's because we're passionate, and it rarely lasts more than half an hour before we're all friends again!

Visiting our showroom is far from an average shopping trip. Nestled between two beautiful reservoirs, our 10,000 sq ft Dutch barn showroom is often described as an Aladdin's cave. We showcase over 30 of our signature tables across eight large rooms filled with furniture, all available for immediate purchase and delivery. You can also customise designs to your preferred size and finish. My dad Paul, brother Justin, or me will be ready to assist if you have any questions. Additionally, you can meet Winnie the pig, Rain the horse, Paddy and Sheamus the Shetland ponies, and our friendly giant dog Barney Boy. After shopping, we can recommend some lovely local spots for
lunch.
